With the major North-South route of I-75 and major East-West route of the Ohio Turnpike contained within its borders, Ohio plays host to a large volume of commercial truck traffic. Many people are unaware that their motor vehicle contains a device known as a “Black Box,” which is constantly recording data. The device is officially called an Event Data Recorder (EDR) which was first introduced in cars by General Motors in 1974. While the device was originally used to deploy airbags within milliseconds of a detected crash, the modern EDR is capable of documenting over 15 types of data. These include the speed of the vehicle, when the driver applied the brakes, information regarding the engine throttle, the readiness and deployment of airbags, and if the seat belts were engaged. Bill was the designated driver. It was 3:00 a.m. He had acted responsibly by consuming only non-alcoholic beverages. After dropping off his friend, Bill drove onto the entrance ramp of I-71 from downtown Columbus. He accelerated as he entered from the left side of the freeway. Suddenly there it was. A Camaro had hit the median wall and was protruding halfway into Bill’s lane. Bill swerved immediately but at 60 miles per hour, he didn’t have time to avoid a collision.
